When working on homes in La Quinta, I typically land in Palm Springs and drive directly to La Quinta. On my most recent project in La Quinta, for the first time, I curated all the art myself. I had sourced many pieces in San Francisco and Los Angeles, but still needed a lot of sculpture, art and accessories to source. So I finally found myself wandering the streets of the Palm Springs Upper Design District. I have always wanted to have the time to do this and I was not disappointed in my finds.
Brian Marki Fine Arts and Framing - 170 East Arenas Road Palm Springs, CA. 92262 http://www.brianmarki.com/
My first Gallery I stopped in was Brian Marki Fine Arts and Framing. They are a bit away from the Palm Springs Design District, about 10 blocks but worth the effort. They not only had great art but are a wonderful source for high quality framing at a decent price. I instantly was captivated by photographer Axel Breutigam. We ended up purchasing one of his photographs of Joshua tree mounted on metal for this home. You feel as if you can walk right into the photograph.
Smith Vargas Fine Art - 1003 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 http://www.smithvargas.com/
I was captivated by the large piece of art in the storefront window. This is how I am with art, it usually captures my eye from afar and draws me in. Then the emotion starts to kick in and I get all giddy inside. This happened to be one of the owners pieces of art. As he explained his thought process to me as he was painting the piece, the lines, the colors exploding. I didn't want to leave his gallery, I wanted to sit and chat with him drinking a glass of wine and smoking cigarettes like it was different era. (I quit smoking 10 years ago) But I was on a mission and as much as I loved this piece I knew it was not right for my client. As I turned the corner - there it was - this painting of two girls on a diving board with the sun hitting them and reflecting in the water, full of life in stillness. I suppose it resonated with me as I thought of my best friend and I in our teens sitting that exact way - worshiping the sun. Luckily it was full of blue, greens and yellows with a palm springs sensibility and I knew it would be perfect for this house. It was a done, we bought it! The artist is Carrie Graber, a local Palm Springs artist.
a LA MOD - 886 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 http://www.alamod.com/
I was in love with this shop. There was so many items that I am obsessed with. They have a a lot of authentic circa 1960 furniture but what grabbed my attention was all the glassware and pottery circa 1960 - see below for my obsessions!
Trousdale's Timeless Modern - 1009 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 http://www.trousdales.net/
This is a little gem of a store with every inch filled with furniture and accessories. I immediately eyed a set of circa 1960 vases in a bright orange that I knew would be perfect for this La Quinta home. Their items were not as well documented with actual designers as a LA MOD but with a little research you could figure it out. I ended breaking up the set - shame on me, but I hope my client will love them enough to go back and get the rest of the vases to have them all. Again another score for my client.
Just Modern - 901 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 http://justmoderndecor.com/
This store is full of great finds - not antiques but new furniture lines, great books and local artists work. I scored 5 books and two art deco palm springs prints that I went and got standard frames at Michael's craft store. Looks fabulous in the guest bedroom! Highly recommend!
Palm Springs Florist - 894 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 http://www.palmspringsflorist.net/
La Quinta does not have any good quality florists. This florist was fantastic. Lots of orchids and succulents. They made me three arrangements in like 10 minutes! Very talented and kind staff.
Flow Modern - 768 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 http://www.flowmodern.com/
Yet another fabulous mid-century modern gallery with art, furniture and accessories. I found some amazing antique glassware reminding me of Madmen era. Apparently they have a warehouse location as well. Unfortunately I didn't have time to check it out. On my list for next time!
Palago - 901 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 http://www.pelagopalmsprings.com/
I had been thinking about an outdoor console for my client and some interesting fruit bowls / kitchen counter accessories and found it all right here. We even ended up ordering an outdoor bar cart, b/c why not! Pelago offers a wide range of products for the home and other indulgences.
Grace Home - 101 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262
Their Palm Springs store is vibrant with color and a joy to wander though. It is a dream of mine to one day own a store like this great design couple does. They carry accessory lines from Dwell and global views plus have their own line of fabrics and furniture. As I have access to many of the lines they carry direct, its still nice to see how other designers put it all together and be able to buy things quick and not have to order it. I ended up buying some books and picture frames for my client's home.
Trina Turk - 891 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 http://www.trinaturk.com/decor/
I think its safe to say that Trina Turk is a big name in the fashion industry with her bright, textural clothing line. It happens to be a staple in my closet. I was thrilled when she came out with a home décor line. Her sense of bright color shows in her throw pillows, tableware and furniture.
On an ending note - after I sent my finds for approval via email to my client - I literally had 3 hours to drive back to Palm Springs and hit 7 stores to make my purchases before they all close. I called them all in advance and they were all so kind and staid open late for me. Every single owner was excited to meet me and all gave a designer discount! Xoxo!
